Dog gets car sick
Every ride ends with a stain on the seat? Motion sickness in dogs can come from an immature vestibular system (puppies), stress or sensitivity to movement.
What helps
Start with very short trips just to the end of the yard and back with rewards. Lengthen gradually. Do not feed a big meal before travel. Provide fresh air and avoid a hot cabin.
Position in the car
Many dogs do better in a secured carrier or on a non-slip mat with less view of the rushing road. Some are calmer when they cannot see the window.
What not to do
Do not scold for vomiting. Do not force long trips ‘so it gets used to it’. Do not give human motion-sickness medicines without a vet.
When to see a vet
If vomiting is severe, there is lethargy, or sickness appears suddenly in an adult dog, other causes should be ruled out.
Common questions
Will a puppy grow out of it?
Often yes as the system matures, especially with gentle exposure.
Do open windows help?
Fresh air helps, but do not let the head out at speed — it is dangerous.
Can I use sedatives?
Only on a vet’s advice. Do not choose them yourself.
