How long can a dog be left alone
Running late at work? Dogs are social animals. Long daily solitude leads to stress, accidents and destruction.
Age guidelines
Puppies should not be left long: the younger, the more often they need a break. Healthy adult dogs of many breeds can manage 4–6 hours, but not as a daily norm without compensation. Seniors and dogs with health issues may need more frequent outings.
What affects tolerance
Breed, temperament, habit, exercise before leaving, access to a toilet or a dog walker. Anxious dogs cope poorly even with short absences.
How to make it easier
A good walk and activity before you leave. A safe space. Toys. Sometimes a midday walker or family help.
Signs it is too long
Puddles, chewed furniture, loud barking reported by neighbours, overly excited or flat greetings.
Common questions
Can I leave the dog for 8–10 hours?
Regularly — bad for most dogs. Better to arrange a break.
Will a second dog help?
Not always. Sometimes two anxious dogs amplify each other.
What about toileting?
An adult may hold for several hours, but that does not mean it is comfortable. Puppies and seniors need more frequent access.
