Tick bite on a dog: what to do

Found a tick after a walk? The main thing is to remove it whole and then monitor the dog.

How to remove

Use fine-tipped tweezers or a special tick hook. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up without sudden jerks. Do not twist hard or cover with oil — those are outdated tips. After removal check that the head is not left behind.

After removal

Wipe the site. You can keep the tick in a container if the vet asks for it. Watch the dog for several weeks: temperature, lethargy, refusal to eat, lameness, dark urine — reasons to go to the clinic.

What not to do

Do not crush the tick with your fingers. Do not yank. Do not use kerosene or oil. Do not wait if worrying signs appear.

Prevention

Regular tick prevention recommended by a vet and checks after walks in grass and woodland reduce risk.

Common questions

Must I take the tick for testing?

Not always. The vet decides based on the situation and symptoms.

Can I remove it at home?

Yes if you do it carefully. If unsure, go to the clinic.

When to see a vet urgently?

Sudden lethargy, high temperature, dark urine, strong lameness — do not delay.

You can find vets in the Petty catalogue.
