How to clean a dog’s paws after a walk
Dirty paws all over the floor? After every walk it is worth cleaning the paws, especially in rain, mud or after the park.
What to keep ready
Pet paw wipes or a soft cloth, warm water, a towel. For heavy dirt — a small basin. Avoid harsh detergents.
How to clean step by step
If the paws are only dusty, wipe between the toes and on the pads with a damp wipe. If mud is heavy, rinse with warm water, gently wash, then dry thoroughly. Pay special attention to the folds between the toes.
After cleaning
Dry the paws well. Check the pads for cracks, cuts, stuck stones or winter chemicals. Do not ignore any damage you find.
In winter and on ice
Road salt and de-icers irritate the skin. Always rinse residues after the walk. Protective paw wax before going out can help, but still clean afterwards.
When to see a vet
If the pads are badly cracked, there is blood or pus, the dog limps heavily or constantly licks the paws, see a veterinarian.
Common questions
Do I need soap every time?
No. Warm water and a wipe are usually enough. Soap dries the skin.
Can I use human wet wipes?
Pet-specific wipes or a plain damp cloth are better. Many human wipes contain alcohol or fragrances.
The dog will not let me touch the paws — what to do?
Train gradually with short touches and rewards. Do not force it.
