How to remove pet urine smell from carpet and sofa

The puddle has dried but the smell remains? Urine soaks into fibres and keeps smelling until its components are broken down. Ordinary cleaning is often not enough.

Why the smell comes back

Urine contains urea and other substances that crystallise when dry. Water and many household cleaners do not fully destroy them, so the smell returns with humidity.

Step by step

First remove what you can mechanically. Blot remaining liquid with a clean cloth. Do not rub — that pushes it deeper. Then apply an enzyme cleaner made for pet odours and leave it to work according to the instructions. After that blot and dry thoroughly.

For carpet and sofa

On carpet work from the edges of the stain toward the centre. On a sofa test the product on a hidden area first. After treatment ensure good ventilation and complete drying.

What not to use

Do not pour bleach or ammonia — they can intensify the smell and are dangerous for animals. Avoid steam on some fabrics without testing. Do not leave the surface damp for long.

When you may need a professional

If urine has soaked deep into sofa filling or carpet underlay, home treatment may not be enough. Professional cleaning is sometimes required.

Common questions

Can ordinary vinegar remove the smell?

Vinegar can reduce the smell temporarily but does not always break down all urine components. Enzyme products work more specifically.

Smell returned after a few days — why?

The product probably did not penetrate fully or the surface did not dry completely. Repeat the treatment and ensure full drying.

How to stop repeat marking?

After cleaning make sure the pet does not return to the same spot. Temporary blocking of access or moving the bed can help.
