Matted fur in dogs and cats: what to do

Mats appearing in the coat? Mats form when shed hair tangles with growing hair. The longer they stay, the tighter they become and the more they pull on the skin.

Why they appear

Long coats, insufficient brushing, moisture, shedding and friction areas (armpits, behind ears, groin) are the main causes. In cats mats often form on the belly and thighs.

What you can do at home

If the mat is small and not too tight, try gently separating it with your fingers, then comb with a wide-tooth comb. Hold the hair at the base so you do not pull the skin. Work calmly in short sessions.

When to go to a groomer

Large, dense mats, especially close to the skin, are better left to a professional. The risk of cuts and pain is high. A groomer can remove them more safely.

What not to do

Do not cut mats with ordinary scissors close to the skin — it is easy to injure the animal. Do not yank them out. Do not ignore mats: they can rub and inflame the skin.

Prevention

Regular brushing suited to the coat type. After damp walks check problem areas. If the animal mats easily, discuss a suitable trim with a groomer.

Common questions

Yes, tight mats pull the skin and can cause discomfort and inflammation.

Are mats normal in cats?
